TIMBERRRR!!!

If you decided to cut down a tree on your property or even just trim the limbs, have you taken all of the precautions to protect yourself, your property, and the property of others?

Every year the Shadduck Agency receives at least one call from an insured after their tree/branches put a hole in their shed’s roof, damaged their home or worse yet injured a friend helping them with the project. The damage to the shed, house, car, etc. would be covered, but the medical and possible liability claim for your injured “former” friend can get sticky. I recommend leaving the big jobs to the professionals who have the proper equipment, experience, and proper insurance coverage.

The follow-up questions always hit us after Mother Nature whips up some strong winds knocking down trees. If the felled tree was healthy there is coverage under your own homeowner policy for your house, outbuildings, and fences whether the tree was yours or your neighbors. If your neighbor’s tree was diseased and you notified the neighbor of its poor condition, then they are liable for the damage that their tree caused to your property. While the best method of notifying your neighbor is in writing, there are ways to word the notice so you do not alienate them before you even have a claim.
