Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless and colorless gas, which could be created whenever a fuel (such as wood, gasoline, coal, natural gas, kerosene, etc) is burning. It is estimated that, in this country, carbon monoxide poisoning from fuel-burning appliances causes more than 200 deaths each year and more than 5,000 trips to the emergency room.
The symptoms associated with carbon monoxide poisoning are much like the flu, headaches, nausea and fatigue, but without the fever. Children tend to be more susceptible than adults. It is called the silent killer because it often goes undetected until it is too late.
If you feel fine outside of the house but experience symptoms when you return, you should become suspicious. If you suspect CO poisoning leave the premises immediately and call 911. It is always better to be cautious than sorry.
Here are a few important safety measures from Shadduck Insurance that you can use to keep your family safe. Make sure the fireplace flue is not blocked.
